Background

Pharnabazus III was a prominent figure in the Achaemenid Persian Empire during the 4th century BCE. He was a member of the Persian noble family and held significant positions within the empire. Pharnabazus III belonged to the Achaemenid royal family, which ruled the Persian Empire from approximately 550 BCE to 330 BCE.He was likely descended from a long line of Persian nobility, with close ties to the Achaemenid kings. Pharnabazus III served as the satrap (provincial governor) of Phrygia, a region in western Anatolia (modern-day Turkey). As satrap, he was responsible for administering the province, collecting taxes, and maintaining order on behalf of the Persian king.

Greek-Persian Wars

His support was instrumental in the Spartan victory over Athens in the Battle of Aegospotami in 405 BCE, a decisive naval engagement that effectively ended the Peloponnesian War. Pharnabazus III's tenure as satrap of Phrygia and his involvement in the Greek-Persian Wars demonstrated his significance in Persian politics and military affairs. His alliance with Sparta and support for anti-Athenian forces contributed to the broader geopolitical dynamics of the time.
